The campaign’s original catch phrase was “Smokey Says – Care Will Prevent 9 out of 10 Forest Fires.” In 1947 it was changed to “Remember… Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires.” Most recently, in 2001, it was again modified to “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires” in response to a massive outbreak of wildfires in natural areas other than forests. The term “wildfire” applies to any unwanted, unplanned, uncontrolled outdoor fire.

With a great need to improve the information centers as several local trails, Lock 4 is getting special attention to the old metal kiosk. After vandalism and being hidden by privet, the entrance to the trail is looking much different. Last fall Aaron Biggers opened up the trail head just off the parking lot to allow some shady area for an expanded kiosk. Middle Tennessee currently has 12 National Mountain Bike Patrollers. Each is 1st Aid-CPR certified, perform basic bicycle repairs, identifies trail maintenance issues and communicates with local land managers regarding opportunities to make each of our trails more enjoyable. Most of all, each Patroller is their as a mountain bike ambassador to assist riders in any way possible.

IMBA-SORBA Middle TN has entered in to a formal relationship with Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation. In a December 2009 Parks board meeting an “Annual Permit” was approved by the board. Typically referred to as an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding), the Annual Permit will allow greater involvement and stewardship by our local chapter as well as enhance the trail experience.
Our chapter has submitted drawings and plans to update the lakeside trail kiosk and build a new trail info center at the Ned Shelton Pinnacle trail head by Spring 2010. …
